Arctic Summer began as a composition in Dynamic Tonality's XronoMorph loop generator. I had borrowed a Tascam 464 cassette portastudio from my friend, and recorded a long improvised performance from the software to the tape. I didn't think much of it, except for a minute of the performance which I liked. I switched the machine into low speed, turned off the DBX noise reduction, and recorded the short clip to my computer.
Months later, I was working on a documentary video in Igloolk, Nunavut during the summer solstice. It was late, and I sat awake in my bright hotel room while children played outside in the night-sun. I listened to my tape experiment and dramatically slowed down the audio using PaulStretch, carefully adjusting the software settings with half-open eyes until I felt no friction to the flow of sound. Then I wrapped a shirt around my head and went to sleep.
Back in Montréal, I used this music to meditate throughout the remainder of the noisy summer-construction season, and I thought about the north. At the boundary of Igloolik is a hill which holds the graveyard. From the top of the hill, I saw the small houses gathered around a melting bay—and when I turned around, an endless ice-field stretched to the horizon, and the sun glared through a frozen crystal haze.
